

ENROLMENT ZONE
Apanui School has an enrolment zone (please see link at bottom of page).
This means that we have more children wanting to attend Apanui School than we have space in our classrooms. Parents and caregivers of tamariki who live ‘out of zone’ need to apply if they wish to attend Apanui School. These applications include siblings of currently enrolled out-of-zone students.
The Ministry of Education requires this to be run via a ballot process.
The exact date that ‘out of zone’ applications close will be determined by the Board. In 2025 the Board will consider the applications for two ‘out of zone’ ballots every year.

Ballot One closes Friday 2nd May 2025 for those students who will become eligible for enrolment during the period July 14, 2025 and December 12, 2025.

Ballot Two closes Friday 24th October 2025 for those students who will become eligible for enrolment during the period February 2nd, 2026 and Friday 3rd July, 2026.
Parents will be informed of the outcome of the ballot by email within three school days of the ballot being held.

Cohort Entry from 2026
Following consultation with our community earlier this year, the Apanui School Board has confirmed that our kura will adopt Cohort Entry for new entrants from Term 1, 2026. This means tamariki will now start school in groups on nationally set dates during each term, rather than individually on or after their fifth birthday. For 2026, the Ministry has confirmed the following start dates for our new entrants:
Term One: Week One - 2nd February or Week Six - 9 March
Term Two: Week One - 20 April or Week Seven - 2 June
Term Three: Week One - 20 July or Week Six - 24 August
Term Four: Week One - 12 October or Week Seven - 16 November
We know cohort entry helps our youngest learners feel confident and secure as they settle alongside a group of peers, which supports calm, consistent routines and smooth transitions for tamariki and whānau.
Priorities for Enrolment
Priority 1. A brother or sister is currently attending Apanui School
Priority 2. A brother or sister used to attend Apanui School
Priority 3. Mother or Father attended Apanui School as a child
Priority 4. Mother or Father is employed by the Apanui School Board or is a Board member
Priority 5. All other children
