  Apanui is a well resourced, decile 5, primary school with  approximately 400  students in February 2013. The school is the closest school to the Whakatane CBD.

 Currently there are 15 classrooms from New Entrants  to Year  6, including three level 2 Maori Immersion classes. The immersion classes are classified as Year 0 - 2, Year 2, 3 & 4, Year 5 &  6.   

Other staff attached to the school include:

a Resource Teacher of Literacy

a Resource Teacher of Hearing  Impaired Children 

two Resource Teachers of Learning and Behaviour

two reading intervention teachers

the National Health School has a base at Apanui with three teachers.

the Dental Clinic has closed and the school is now serviced by mobile units.

Extra facilities  include:

large playing fields

a purpose-built bicycle track

 a large hall for assemblies, gymnastics, phys. ed., music, drama  etc

 a computer suite as well as computers in every classroom

 a newly refurbished, well stocked library

 a swimming pool

 special needs facilities and staff

 two adventure playgrounds

 netball courts

 a room specifically resourced for teaching Te Reo Maori

 free buses provide transport to and from Apanui for children from Coastlands and other outlying areas.

The historic Apanui Infant School has recently been moved from its original site in Domain Rd and resited in the Apanui Primary School grounds, thanks to Ngati Awa and Te Whare Wananga o Awanuiarangi.  It is to be developed as a valuable  resource for the school,
